What is the thirstiest fan base in the NBA? – Quora link

Favorite answer by Kevin Lin:

The Knicks fanbase is large and passionate — New York City is often referred to as the “mecca of basketball” — but the last time the Knicks won an NBA championship was 40 years ago. The Patrick Ewing era (1985-2000) had its successes but the Knicks always fell short of the championship, each year having their fans’s hearts broken by Reggie Miller, or Michael Jordan, or else John Starks’s streakiness. Then came Allan Houston’s horrible contract, and then the utterly embarrassing Isiah Thomas era, and then the Stephon Marbury breakdown…

Which brings us to today. The Knicks have picked up some star power in Amare Stoudamire and Carmelo Anthony (though they missed out on the LeBron James sweepstakes), but that tandem has thus far been completely underwhelming. Linsanity came — but in the end the Knicks organization’s dysfunction still reigned — and went.

The Knicks, as of May 1, 2012, are in the playoffs, but they have lost 12 straight playoff games, and Amare Stoudamire has just injured his hand after punching the glass encasement of a fire extinguisher in frustration after the Knicks’s most recent loss to the Heat. So things aren’t looking good.

To be a Knicks fan is to have reason for high hopes every once in a while and then to inevitably have those hopes come crashing down in disappointment every single time for a period of almost 40 consecutive years.
